After a video of a person eating gutka inside a Namma Metro train went viral on social media, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced strict measures against passengers consuming chewable tobacco products, such as gutka and pan masala, within its premises and on trains.
The decision comes following multiple public complaints regarding spitting and littering caused by such products, said BMRCL officials.
To enforce these measures, BMRCL will step up patrolling during non-peak hours, and introduce random physical pat-down checks at metro stations, as such substances cannot be detected through metal detectors. Platform security personnel will be sensitised to identify violators while the central surveillance team has been directed to monitor passenger behaviour closely and alert on-duty security staff in real-time.
Passengers found guilty of consuming or carrying chewable tobacco-based products will be fined in accordance with BMRCL rules.
“Enhanced surveillance measures will be active both on platforms and inside metro coaches to ensure cleaner and more hygienic surroundings,” an official said.
In addition to enforcement, BMRCL plans to roll out a wide-reaching awareness campaign aimed at educating commuters about the ill-effects and penalties associated with using tobacco products in metro areas. Officials have appealed to the public to support the initiative and help maintain a pleasant commuting environment for all.
