The Coimbatore City Police have issued externment orders against 29 history-sheeters, directing them to stay away from the city for a period of six months.
According to the police, people were often fearful of filing police complaints due to the presence of the said history-sheeters in the city. Additionally, others hesitated to appear in court as witnesses in cases where the history-sheeters have been involved.
Based on instructions from Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, show-cause notices were served on 29 history-sheeters under Section 51-A (power to direct removal of persons from city in special cases) of the Madras City Police Act, 1888. They appeared before Deputy Commissioners of Police R. Uthayakumar and N. Devanathan and submitted their explanations.
The police further conducted direct and discreet inquiries on the 29 persons and found out that they had been involved in criminal activities. The Commissioner issued externment orders against them on April 21.
