Embassy of Angola in India celebrates 23 years of Peace and National Reconciliation with Angolan students at Andhra University

The Embassy of Angola in India celebrated its 23 years of Peace and National Reconciliation on the 23rd anniversary of Angola Peace Day on the Andhra University campus here on Saturday in the presence of their nationals who are university students.

The programme was attended by  Ambassador of Angola in India Clemente Camenha, and 46 Angolan students, on the university campus.

He met the university Vice-Chancellor G. P. Rajasekhar. He thanked the university management for educational facilities to their 46 nationals, studying in various courses on the campus.

On the occasion, Mr. Camenha said that Peace and National Reconciliation Day, observed annually on April 4 in Angola, commemorates the end of the Angolan Civil War, which lasted from 1975 until 2002.

“This day marks the signing of the Luena Memorandum of Understanding on April 4, 2002, between the Angolan government and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), effectively ceasing 27 years of conflict. The civil war erupted shortly after Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975, primarily involving power struggles between the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and UNITA,” Mr. Camenha said.

The students actively participated with the singing of national anthems of India and Angola, recitation of poems and singing of melodious songs and their thoughts about Peace and National Reconciliation Day with patriotism and national pride.

A short video showcasing the development of the country after the establishment of peace was shown to the participants.
