Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss has been cast as Snoop Dogg in an upcoming biopic from Universal Pictures, marking a major breakthrough role for the young actor. The film, still untitled, will chronicle the rise of Calvin Broadus Jr., better known to the world as Snoop Dogg, from Long Beach teenager to West Coast hip-hop icon.

The biopic will be directed by Craig Brewer, known for Dolemite Is My Name, Coming 2 America, and Hustle & Flow. Brewer also co-wrote the script with Black Panther screenwriter Joe Robert Cole. Music from Snoop Dogg’s extensive catalog will be a key part of the film’s storytelling, offering an authentic soundtrack to the rapper’s journey.

Daviss, best known for playing Pope in Netflix’s Outer Banks, has also appeared in Do Revenge, Age of Summer, and Edge of the World. His casting received a thumbs-up from Snoop himself, who will serve as a producer alongside Brian Grazer and Sara Ramaker under the Death Row Pictures banner.

This film marks the first project under Death Row Pictures’ new partnership with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios, signaling a shift in the legendary record label’s move into film and visual media. It’s Universal’s third major project focusing on hip-hop legends, following 8 Mile and Straight Outta Compton, which featured a young Snoop portrayed by LaKeith Stanfield.

The movie will explore Snoop Dogg’s early days with Death Row Records, his breakout success with the Dr. Dre-produced album Doggystyle, and his evolution into a pop culture mainstay.
