A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski has been tapped to helm the live-action adaptation of Death Stranding, the genre-bending video game from visionary creator Hideo Kojima. A24 and Kojima Productions are producing, with Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen’s Square Peg also joining the project.

Sarnoski, coming off the success of Pig and his recent A Quiet Place prequel, will write and direct the film. While details remain under wraps, sources say the adaptation will explore the mysterious “Death Stranding” — a cataclysmic event that shattered the line between the living and the dead, unleashing ghostly creatures into a fractured world on the edge of collapse.

Kojima’s original game, released in 2019, follows courier Sam Porter Bridges (voiced by Norman Reedus) as he traverses a devastated America, reconnecting isolated outposts and battling supernatural threats. With over 19 million players worldwide, Death Stranding has become a modern cult classic, praised for its world-building, emotional storytelling, and striking visuals.

It’s unclear whether the film will follow Bridges’ journey or take a new narrative direction within the same universe. Kojima has previously said the film “will be for anyone who loves cinema,” suggesting a broader appeal beyond just fans of the game.

The announcement comes amid a surge of video game adaptations, following hits like The Last of Us, Fallout,The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Sonic the Hedgehog. With Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launching this June and a concert tour on the way, the franchise is building serious momentum.
