HBO has released the first trailer for Mountainhead, the upcoming film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, set to premiere May 31 on Max. The film stars Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef as four ultra-wealthy tech moguls grappling with personal and global unraveling during a luxury retreat.

The story follows four longtime friends, whose combined net worth nears half a trillion dollars, as they escape to a remote snow-covered location for what’s supposed to be a weekend of relaxation. However, their getaway quickly spirals as news of international crises — including political unrest, sectarian violence, and economic collapse — seeps into their insulated world.
Carell plays Randall, while Schwartzman is cast as Hugo Van Yalk, a character nicknamed “Souper.” Youssef plays Jeff, who pointedly critiques Smith’s character, Venis, for his controversial tech platform that has allegedly fueled disinformation and instability. In one scene, the group is interrupted by a call from the President of the United States, prompting a sharp exchange. Youssef’s Jeff says, “That your platform has inflamed a volatile situation, circulating unfalsifiable deepfakes, massive fraud, market instability.”

Armstrong both wrote and directed Mountainhead, assembling a production team that includes longtime collaborators Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, and Mark Mylod. The film was shot and edited on an unusually tight schedule, with production beginning just in March.
