NGT pulls up authorities over management of waste at Bandhwari landfill in Gurugram

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has pulled up municipal corporations of Gurugram and Faridabad over “gross deficiencies” in the management of waste at Bandhwari landfill in Gurugram.

The NGT also directed the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) to file a fresh affidavit disclosing the details of levy and recovery of environmental compensation from the municipal corporations of Gurugram and Faridabad within six weeks.

“There is no consistent plan by Municipal Corporations of Gurugram and Faridabad on setting up waste processing facilities. Municipal Corporation of Gurugram earlier had a plan to set up waste-to-energy plant that is now being replaced with torrefied charcoal which will be commissioned by 2027,” the Principal Bench of the NGT said in an order dated April 15, which was uploaded on the website on Tuesday.

The Principal Bench of the NGT comprising chairperson Prakash Shrivastava, judicial member Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A. Senthil Vel gave the order in a matter related to improper handling of waste at Bandhwari landfill.

The green court also noted that the amount of waste at the landfill has increased over time.

“In the affidavit dated 13.12.2024 filed by the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram, balance quantity of waste to be processed as on 01.12.2024 was disclosed to be 8.84 lakh MT. In the subsequent affidavit dated 09.04.202, the quantity disclosed as on 31.03.2025 is 11.32 lakh MT, meaning thereby, legacy waste is increasing,” the order said.
