Sewage Treatment Plant nearing completion at Singanallur tank

Water mixed with sewage and water hyacinth will no longer be an issue at the Singanallur tank with the Corporation nearing completion of work on the Sewage Treatment Plant, which can treat two million litres per day.

With a capacity to treat two million litres per day, the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for ₹4.50 crore with a capacity to treat two million litres per day is nearing completion at the Singanallur tank in the East Zone of the Coimbatore Corporation.

Spread over 250 acres along Tiruchi Road, the Singanallur tank receives water from the Noyyal River through the Sanganoor canal, which, after filling up the water spread area, flows into the Sulur tank. Over the years, the tank had suffered from water hyacinth infestation, and efforts to reintroduce boating activities have remained unsuccessful.

The Corporation had made several attempts to address the issues and resume boating services at the tank, but they failed in the long term. Therefore, they decided to pursue a permanent solution by installing a Sewage Treatment Plant, with more than ninety percent of the work now completed. The remaining tasks are expected to be finished within the next two to three months. Once the project is completed, a trial run will be conducted, and a solution to the water hyacinth problem will also be implemented.

Like the Singanallur tank, the other tanks in the city – Ukkadam, Valankulam, Selvampathy, Krishnampathy, Kumarasamy tank, Selvachinthamani and Kurichi – face the same problem of sewage and water hyacinth. The Corporation officials said that the other tanks would also be equipped with STP in a phased manner.
