SSI, two police constables caught while receiving bribe

Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in a trap caught three police personnel at Dhanushkodi while receiving a bribe of ₹2,500 from a person on Tuesday.

According to police, three days ago, the complainant was walking on a road in Rameswaram with two bottles of liquor and he was stopped by police personnel on patrol duty.  The police inquired about the possession of liquor bottles and later took him to the police station. On arriving at the station, senior police officials warned him and sent him away.

But Special Sub Inspector Kanagasabapathy, 55, directed the complainant to visit him at the station the following day.  When he met him, the SSI threatened him and demanded ₹2,500 for not booking him under charges of illegal possession of liquor bottles. As the complainant did not have money, he informed the SSI that he would give the money the next day.

Later, he lodged a complaint with the DVAC. On Tuesday, when the complainant handed over the bribe to the SSI and two police constables – Muthu Karuppiah, 33, and Mari, 32, near the police station, the DVAC officials who had set the trap caught the three police personnel red-handed.

Subsequently, the trio were arrested, and cases booked against them.

Unclaimed cash

In another incident, DVAC officials during a surprise check at Bogalur panchayat union office, seized ₹2.56 lakh from a desk, said to be unclaimed. The officials found ₹1.50 lahh in another desk. The officials also confiscated ₹90,000 from contractors waiting outside the office.

Further investigations are on.
