Water connection deposit goes up in Tirunelveli

Apart from upwardly revising drinking water tax, Tirunelveli Corporation has also decided to increase the deposit being collected for giving drinking water connections to residential and commercial buildings.

According to the new structure, the deposit has been fixed as per the plinth area of the buildings for which the drinking water connection is given. The deposit for drinking water connection for a domestic building measuring less than 600 square feet is ₹7,500 as against the ₹6,500 collected previously for all domestic buildings irrespective of the plinth area. For commercial and industrial structures with a plinth area of up to 600 sq.ft, the deposit will be ₹ 15,000.

The domestic building measuring from 600 sq ft to 1,200 sq ft. will have to pay a deposit of ₹10,000, while the amount fixed for commercial and industrial buildings is ₹20,000. The deposit for domestic buildings measuring from 1,201 to 1,800 sq. ft will be ₹12,500 and for commercial and industrial buildings it will be ₹25,000. Domestic building with a plinth area of over 1,800 sq ft. will have to pay ₹15,000 and commercial and industrial buildings will have to pay ₹30,000.

Chairman of Palayamkottai zone M. Francis said these drastic changes in the drinking water tax and the deposits had been effected following the norms stipulated by the funding agencies of the drinking water projects.

“Since the Corporation has to prove to the funding agencies its repaying capacity, the tax and the deposit have been increased, which will have a telling impact on the residents. After the councillors opposed, the Corporation has passed the proposal at the intervention of the Commissioner of Municipal Administration,” Mr. Francis said.
